Laser Scar Removal - Virginia Surgical Arts

Scar Removal for Acne Scars and Surgical Scars, All Skin Types and Excellent Outcomes

Acne scars and surgical scars may be a cause of a person’s emotional and or physical pain and affect their quality of life. In severe cases, scars can even limit a person’s mobility.

Surgical scar removal procedures are painful and invasive and have a risk for complications. Laser scar removal from Palomar® offers a noninvasive solution that uses fractional laser technology to deliver rapid, reliable scar removal with less risk, less pain and minimal downtime.

Our fractional laser technology is the driving power behind our acne and surgical scar removal procedure. We use pulses of laser light to coagulate scar tissue and trigger healthy new tissue to form in clients’ skin.  Healing time is minimal, infection risk is eliminated and little to no pain is felt.

Laser scar removal with Palomar is appropriate for use on all skin types, making ours the preferred method of scar removal for excellent clinical outcomes.

How Laser Scar Removal Works

Laser scar removal for acne and surgical scars uses fractional laser light to create micro-columns of coagulated tissue that extend deep into the dermis without ablating the epidermis.

This triggers a wound-healing process that replaces the disorganized, compacted scar tissue with healthy new tissue, greatly diminishing the appearance of the scar tissue. Advanced Contact Cooling protects the epidermis, promoting safer, more comfortable treatments.

If you are considering more corrective measures for unwanted scar tissue, call Virginia Surgical Arts for a free consultation to discuss your options and skin care goals!  (757)430-7690.

The Hype behind the Acai Berry - Virginia Surgical Arts

The Acai Berry is a fruit that actually improves how a person looks, feels and performs. The berry contains large amounts of antioxidants which are vitamins, minerals and enzymes known to fight cancer and slow the ageing process.  This amazing fruit is a natural and powerful food used by natives deep in the heart of the Amazon Jungle that has made its way to the Western World and is being touted as “Nature’s Super Food”. They are absolutely packed with antioxidants, minerals & vitamins because the Amazon sun bears down on them throughout the long 12 hour days and in order to survive they have to carry a massive amount of nutrients other plants can simply get away without!

The fruit is loaded with antioxidants to slow down oxidative damage to our bodies, amino acids which are building blocks of proteins, and essential fatty acids which keep skin healthy, prevent aging, increases heart health, and promotes healthy and fast weight loss.

It even contains 3 ½ times the concentration of anthocyanins as red wine. Anthocyanins offer protective benefits to the cardiovascular system, digestive organs, brain, blood cells, tissue and anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

The Acai Berry features a full arsenal of natural vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and dietary fibers and heavy concentrations of B1, B2 , B3, C and E (promoting the physical condition of the nervous system, skin, hair, and liver as well as the production of red blood cells).

The fruit also includes potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus which are all important for general health and well being.  It is also a natural energy booster and appetite suppressant as well as providing a healthy increase in your body’s metabolism.  Some added benefits are the following….

Balanced Weight Loss

The high doses of antioxidants, dietary fiber and phytosterols help your body burn fat faster and more efficiently. The truth is that short of dangerous prescription weight loss medication, you aren’t going to find a more powerful solution to losing weight. Plus this is 100% natural and safe.

Increased Energy for Active Lifestyles

Used by many Brazilian athletes most notably soccer players and Jujitsu fighters prior to competition. I am an avid workout enthusiast myself and it also gives me a serious kick in the pants but without the jitters or crashes of energy drinks.

Flushes Toxins

Removes harmful toxins from the body through colon cleansing. The fiber and strong amounts of antioxidants team up to flush large amounts of toxins from the body. In fact, it isn’t uncommon for someone to drop several pounds within a few days which also results in a more tone looking tummy!

Boost Immune System

Acts as an anti-viral/anti-bacterial agent that improves the immune system and fights disease. One of the problems I have always had when I workout is I tend to get sick a lot as it took a toll on my naturally weak immune system. When I started taking Acai I never had any immunity problems again.

Beautiful Skin

Famed skin doctor Dr. Perricone referred to Acai as the number 1 skin food in the world! It really does help clear up blemishes and give you a natural glow.

Anti – Aging

Has high concentrations of antioxidants which slow down the ageing process by reducing and repairing cellular damage caused by free radicals. Your not only going to look younger on the outside but you are going to feel younger on the inside.

Promotes Peaceful Sleep

Assists in the production of serotonin in the body which is vitally important in regulating sleep patterns. Of course it will also help to work at going to bed at the same time every night and turning off the TV at least 30 minutes before you go to bed but Acai Berry is a huge help at getting your brain into sleep mode.

Sex Drive

When taken by couples this all natural high performance fuel increases the ability to create physical stimulation because of its impact on improving endurance.

Life requires you to keep up, require the same from your supplements! You can live better by feeling better with the power of Pure Acai Berry!

Is Latisse safe?? - Virginia Surgical Arts

LATISSE® solution is the only FDA approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.

LATISSE® solution works gradually and remarkably — with full results at week 16. Once you begin, you must continue applying the topical solution each night and follow the directions for best results. If you stop using LATISSE® at any time, your eyelashes will return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months.

If you’re considering LATISSE® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03%, it’s important to get all the facts first. You may have questions about how the treatment works, how soon you’ll see results, and the safety of the product. This blog was intended to give you a basic understanding of the product, but you should ask your doctor to see if LATISSE® is right for you.

Possible side effects:

The most common side effects after using LATISSE® are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness, which were reported in approximately 4% of clinical trial patients. LATISSE® solution may cause other less common side effects which typically occur close to where LATISSE® is applied. These include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes and redness of the eyelids.

If you develop a new ocular condition (e.g., trauma or infection), experience a sudden decrease in visual acuity, have ocular surgery, or develop any ocular reactions, particularly conjunctivitis and eyelid reactions, you should immediately seek your physician’s advice concerning the continued use of LATISSE® solution.

LATISSE® solution use may cause darkening of the eyelid skin which may be reversible. LATISSE® use may cause increased brown iris pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely to be permanent. While very infrequent, increased iris pigmentation has occurred when LATISSE® was administered. The clinical study used to get FDA approval was the same clinical study used for Lumigan, the drug that treats glaucoma. In the Latisse study there was NO reports of iris pigmentation color change.

It is possible for hair growth to occur in other areas of your skin that LATISSE® frequently touches. Any excess solution outside the upper eyelid margin should be blotted with a tissue or other absorbent material to reduce the chance of this happening. It is possible for a difference in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation (darkness), number of eyelash hairs and/or direction of eyelash growth to occur between eyes (e.g., results may vary for each eye). These differences, should they occur, will usually go away if you stop using LATISSE®.

Some important application tips:

When applying LATISSE® solution, it’s important to follow the complete directions. Here are a few simple things to keep in mind:
  • Do not apply in the eye or to the lower lid.
  • Only use the sterile applicators supplied with LATISSE® to apply the product.
  • Don’t allow the tip of the bottle or applicator to touch fingers or any other unintended surface, as contamination by common bacteria is known to cause infections.
  • Remove contact lenses prior to applying LATISSE®. Contact lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes afterward.
  • Remember, if you stop using LATISSE®, lashes will gradually return to their previous appearance.
If you are considering making Latisse a part of your skin care regimen, call Virginia Surgical Arts today for your compimentary consultation!  (757)430-7690.

What to Expect After Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery - Virginia Surgical Arts

Cosmetic eyelid surgery – also known as blepharoplasty - is a common surgery that results in a more rested, refreshed and alert appearance for many patients. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), it was the third most popular cosmetic surgery performed by member doctors in 2011, with more than 147,500 people undergoing it.

The procedure is ideal for individuals who have excess or loose skin on the upper eyelids, puffy eyes that make them seem tired, bags and dark circles under the eyes or lower eyelid droopiness.

However, potential patients should know what to expect post-surgery.

Those who have eyelid surgery may experience some discomfort and blurry vision immediately following the procedure. This is due to an ointment that is put on the eyes to protect them while the surgery is being performed, and is only temporary.

Mild discomfort can be expected in the first week to ten days post-surgery. However, pain medication should help alleviate discomfort. Individuals are also encouraged to take an antibiotic, if prescribed by their physician, to reduce the risk of infection.

Doctors say many patients may have trouble sleeping and should keep their heads elevated in order to minimize swelling.  Wearing a special eye mask when sleeping may also be advised.

Those who wear eyeglasses can resume wearing them immediately after the surgery, but contact lens use isn’t recommended for at least two weeks. Wearing eye makeup also isn’t advised until about a week or two later.

“Most people are able to go back to work within 10 days after their blepharoplasty, but certain tasks such as reading may be challenging due to blurred vision,” according to facialplasticsurgery.net “You will likely be able to watch TV after a few days. Do not participate in strenuous activities for at least three weeks. Avoid contact sports until your surgeon gives you the all-clear.”

It’s also important to protect the eyes and the incisions from the sun with sunglasses and sunblock ointment. Your doctor will advise you on how to do this safely. Additionally, patients are encouraged to follow their doctors instructions on cleaning and caring for the eyes while recovering.

While it’s important to follow your doctor’s orders before and after any surgery, one of the most important precautions patients can take is to choose a licensed, board-certified plastic surgeon for this and any other type of cosmetic procedure. This will not only ensure the patient’s safety, it will also help ensure a positive outcome.

Accutane (Isotretinoin) - Virginia Surgical arts

What is isotretinoin?

Isotretinoin is a form of vitamin A. It reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin, and helps your skin renew itself more quickly. Isotretinoin is used to treat severe nodular acne that has not responded to other treatments, including antibiotics.

What is the most important information I should know about isotretinoin?

Isotretinoin can cause severe, life-threatening birth defects. Never use isotretinoin if you are pregnant. Women of child-bearing potential must agree in writing to use two specific forms of birth control and have regular pregnancy tests before, during, and after taking isotretinoin. It is available only under a special program called iPLEDGE. It is dangerous to try and purchase isotretinoin on the Internet or from vendors outside of the United States. Do not take vitamin supplements containing vitamin A while you are taking isotretinoin. Do not donate blood while taking isotretinoin and for at least 30 days after you stop taking it.

How should I take isotretinoin?

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Each prescription of isotretinoin must be filled within 7 days of the date it was prescribed by your doctor. You will receive no more than a 30-day supply of isotretinoin at one time.

Always take isotretinoin with a full glass of water to prevent the capsule from melting in your esophagus (food pipe), causing irritation. Do not chew or suck on the capsule. Swallow it as quickly as possible. Take isotretinoin with food or milk. Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your acne may seem to get worse at first, but should then begin to improve. To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested often. Your liver function may also need to be tested. Visit your doctor regularly.  Never share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

What should I avoid while taking isotretinoin?

Do not take vitamin supplements containing vitamin A while you are taking isotretinoin. Do not donate blood while taking isotretinoin and for at least 30 days after you stop taking it. Donated blood that is later given to pregnant woman could lead to birth defects in her baby if the blood contains any level of isotretinoin. Do not use wax hair removers or have dermabrasion or laser skin treatments while you are taking isotretinoin and for at least 6 months after you stop taking it. Scarring may result.Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Isotretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Isotretinoin may impair your vision, especially at night. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to see clearly.
